Back to School

The kids were so excited to start school this week!

We spent our last morning together making a strawberry-rhubarb pie and talking through how to put on the armor of God every day before school.  The kids questioned the crazy armor we found around the house, but I think they understood the point.

Anna’s first day was a shortened time with parents in the classroom.  She unloaded all of her supplies, worked on a craft, listened to a story, and had recess.  Anna is in the same classroom (different teacher) that James was in for kindergarten which is fun for her.  Her teacher is very nice and Anna is so excited.  She goes to school only in the afternoons, Monday through Thursday.  She’s going to do great in kindergarten!

James is a big third-grader now and has been counting the days until school.  I think he’s excited to have Anna at his school and is looking forward to showing her the ropes. James’ teacher is a male this year, a tall, 6 foot 4 inches male which James thinks is so cool.  After the first day James said, “Mom, I think he’s 7 feet tall!”  Pretty close!

After the first day of school, both kids were pretty tired.  On the way home, James, who is usually needing a few minutes to himself before answering a bunch of questions, was talking a mile a minute.  Anna, on the other hand, the bubbly one, was slumped in her car seat, half asleep already and not interested in sharing about her day.  Both recovered fine after getting home and having some food, but I think it’s going to take a few weeks to get adjusted.

I’m planning on volunteering in the kids’ classrooms again this year which I love.  Right now the kids want me to come help out which is great.  I’m sure a day will come when they’ll prefer that I stay home.  So, this year I’ll be helping in Anna’s class for reading groups once a week and in James’ class doing some grading for the teacher weekly.

We are off and running and praying this school year God will show more of Himself to James and Anna through their school, teachers, and friends.
