Scripture Journals

Last year sometime a friend shared the following link on Facebook and I thought it was so interesting.  The post is titled Transformative Prayer for Your Kids and I would agree!  The author started keeping journals for each of her children and rather than write her own thoughts, ideas, or prayers, she listed scripture and prayed the scripture for each child by inserting their name where appropriate.

For example:

I pray that Anna will enjoy good health and that all will go well with her.  (3 John 2)
Let Anna lie down and sleep in peace.  (Psalm 4:8)

I loved this idea and have started a journal for James, Anna, and Kenny.  I’m using the book she suggested, Praying the Scriptures for your Children as well as The Power of a Praying Wife prayer cards (I’ve used these for years as I pray for Kenny and love them).  I’m ashamed to say I happened to have a copy of the first book on the shelf that I’d never opened.  I was grateful to already have a copy and reminded myself that God uses certain books in our spiritual walk at just the right time.  I’ve got many books I haven’t read yet and trust that God will bring them to mind when I am ready to read them.

I’m keeping this simple and sitting down to write when the Lord prompts me or when there’s a specific issue I want to pray about.  I’m hoping this will not only help my in my prayer time for my family, but also be a sweet book for them to look at someday – something they can refer to while praying for themselves.

What other books or methods do you use to pray for your family?

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”  1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

“Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving.”  Colossians 4:2

  1. I used a similar book praying for you kids – ‘Every day I pray for my teenager’ and before you were teens, I used the ‘Prayers that Avail Much’ and there were prayers in both books for every situation one would want to pray about. Very good investment of your time! Great ideas…well done, honey!

    • Yes, now that you mentioned it I do remember seeing that book at home. Thank you so much, Mom, for your years – and continued years – of prayer for us!
