Last August I had the privilege of being in a friend’s wedding in Omaha. Ann and I were childhood friends and have stayed in touch over the years. Since the wedding fell the weekend before our anniversary, Kenny and I decided to make it a kid-free weekend. Mom and Dad graciously agreed (jumped at the chance) to keep the kids for the long weekend.
The wedding was a great chance to see old friends and catch up. I visited with an elementary school teacher of mine who had an enormous impact on me. I loved having her for Kindergarten and First Grade and have such fond memories of her class.
And, Kenny and I really enjoyed our time spent with Ann’s sister, Mary, and her husband Matt. Mary was my sister’s best pal growing up. Ann, Mary, Sheila, and I were four peas in a pod and did everything together. We have such wonderful memories with them.
It was a beautiful wedding and I’m so happy for Ann & Bob!
After the wedding, Kenny and I stayed in Omaha an extra day and a half to sightsee and enjoy our time away. We spent part of one day exploring several train museums. So fun to see Kenny giddy with excitement as we toured these sites. We also enjoyed several nice meals out together…quiet dining atmospheres, excellent food, and no children needing assistance during the meal. Don’t get me wrong, we enjoy taking our kids out to eat too, and actually, they do very well. However, a grown-up meal alone is so nice once in awhile.
The other highlight of the trip for us was sleeping in every morning. It was heavenly. We did set our alarm to make it downstairs in time for the free continental breakfast, though. Sleeping in on occasion is probably one of the things we miss the most from our pre-kid life. I’m sure there will be a day, though, when we’re older and have plenty of time to sleep in, and we’ll greatly miss our children being around. So, in the meantime, we’re enjoying our wake-up of pitter-patter little feet that come crawl into bed with us and ask what’s for breakfast.
Meanwhile, James and Anna had a great time with Pa and G’ma. And, aside from being exhausted, I think Pa and G’ma had a great time, too. We recently asked them if they’d be interested in doing another long weekend with the kids this summer. I have wonderful memories of going to spend a week in the summer with my grandparents, and would love for James and Anna to experience that in the home I grew up in. We’d like to make that a fun tradition for the kids. And, who knows? Maybe Kenny and I will slip away for another weekend of sleeping in.
