Soccer Buddies

A few weeks ago, we started both kids in Soccer Buddies.  James played for one session a couple years ago and this is Anna’s first time.  Since James is older now, he’s on his own in class with other kids his age, and I’m accompanying Anna on the field for her class.

We all go Thursday mornings and the classes take place simultaneously for 50 minutes.  It’s really working out great.  Kenny came the first week to take some pictures and plans on coming a few other times to observe.  The session lasts 12 weeks.

This program is great in that it teaches the kids soccer skills gradually.  For example, in Anna’s class they not only do some work with the ball, but also do various activities with stacking cones to teach the kids coordination.  They also throw in some fun activities with bubbles, a parachute, and bouncy balls.  So far, the bubbles are her favorite.

Then by the time they get to the five-year-old class, they’re learning terms and rules for soccer.  On James’s first day the coach had them scrimmaging against each other.  They’re not using goalies yet, but working as a team to score goals.

It’s been fun to see how James’s skills have improved since he played last.  He gets to wear shin guards now, which he thinks is so grown up.  And, he has one of his favorite coaches from the last time he played.

Anna is doing great although it took her a good 15-20 minutes the first day to let go of my leg.  It was a little difficult running down the field with a toddler strapped to my leg.  She finally warmed up to the idea and is now having a great time.  She surprisingly can dribble a soccer ball down the field quite well!  She then uses her hands to line up the ball with the goal and kicks it in!  Amazing!  Eventually she’ll learn to only use her feet.

I’m loving the time with the kids and James and Anna look forward to soccer every week. In fact, James has a calendar in his room displaying all of his important engagements. He’s doing a great job of learning the days of the week and counting up the days until soccer!
