The Sound of Music

This month marks the 50th Anniversary of The Sound of Music!  This is one of my all-time favorite movies and musicals.  I typically try to watch it once a year.  When Kenny and I were first married, he would graciously watch with me, but now going on 11 years of marriage, he’s had enough so I’m on my own to watch it.  He was a great sport for many years, so I suppose that’s fair.

Theaters across the nation were showing it for the anniversary several weeks ago, so when a girlfriend invited me to go, I jumped at the chance.  I had never seen it on the big screen and it was incredible!  We noticed several details we had never seen before which was fun.

I absolutely love the music for this show, of course, but I also love the story.  Maria searching for who she is and finding her purpose in the middle of the VonTrapp family. The Captain discovering how cold he had become and turning back to his children and to music.  He is affectionate with them again and brings music back into the house which completely changes the atmosphere of their home.  And of course the children – who couldn’t love the VonTrapp children!  I so enjoy each of their personalities and watching them thrive under the care of Maria and the love of their father once again.  Beautiful.  Of course, what they all are really searching for is Jesus, but that’s a topic for another day. While it is sad watching a film where the characters seem to miss the point, there still is great value in the beautiful scenes, music, and dialogue.

Love, love this musical!  Maybe one of the kids will develop a love for it too, one day.

  1. That’s so fun, Jess. I didn’t realize it was the 50th anniv. I enjoyed seeing the now and then photo of the actors! I have fond memories of watching this movie as a kid, but haven’t seen it in ages. I did watch the Carrie Underwood version on TV a couple years ago and was not impressed.
