We’ve been on vacation all of last week, so I’m just getting back around to the blogging world and sifting through all of our pictures.
For a few years now, every summer we make an annual trip to NE for a week. We make lots of other trips to NE during the year too, but make a point to squeeze several things into one week. Our goal is to spend one day at Lake McConaughy, travel with my parents to see my grandmother in north-eastern NE, and then we leave our kids with mom and dad for a few days and Kenny and I enjoy two days to ourselves. That was our plan again this year and it worked great. It’s a full week, but so fun.
We started our vacation with a trip to Casa Bonita on the way. A fun summer-time tradition!
Our day at the lake couldn’t have been more perfect. The weather wasn’t terribly hot; in fact, in the water under the shade of the trees we were actually chilly and had to move into the sun. We had a fun day of relaxing and swimming, and the kids had their fill of building sand castles. So sweet that they are coming to love the same lake I grew up loving!
Our time visiting Grandma Goodwater was special too. She is 93 so every visit we have is a special one. We were also able to see quite a few other family members while we were there with a meal out together at Goody’s Grille; a distant family member’s restaurant. And of course, one of the highlights for the kids was staying in a hotel. We also toured the Madison County Museum; the county where mom and dad grew up, went to school, and were married. In fact, the gal in charge of showing you around the museum was Mom’s Home Ec teacher from high-school. Her husband was the shop teacher and dad was in his class. So fun to see them all reconnect.
The kids enjoyed two days at G’pa and G’ma’s working with Pa in the garden, having water gun and water balloon fights, riding bikes, and helping in the kitchen. I love that they get a chance to create some great memories together like that. There’s something special about going to G’pa and G’ma’s without mom and dad. As kids we visited G’pa and G’ma Goodwater on our own and I have some sweet memories from those trips.
Kenny and I traveled back to Denver for our two days alone. He found a great deal on a hotel downtown near 16th street; our favorite place to stay in Denver. We enjoyed a beautiful suite and had some great time to relax.
Now that our vacation is over it’s time to start preparing for school. We have supplies and uniforms to buy, but still are trying to enjoy our last few weeks of summer together.
