Kenny just finished another show last weekend; he designed, rented, hung, and ran lights for Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. He’s directed this show in the past, but this time, the Light Guy. I’ve mentioned before that doing lights for a show is a far less commitment than directing or acting. He’s gone evenings for a week or two versus rehearsals for months in advance. This works so much better for our family.
This is one of Kenny’s favorites hobbies – he is so good at it and I’m glad he has an avenue to pursue and use his skills. There are few lighting guys in town that know what Kenny does and that makes him valuable and sought after. He is often turning down shows which is a high compliment. I’m so proud of him.
And, the gift he’s giving James and Anna by exposing them to this world is invaluable. They enjoy tagging along to work in the theater with Kenny, following him around and helping when they can. In a show this past spring, Kenny had Anna cutting gels out for lights (thin plastic sheets that slide in front of the light to change the color), and James sat in the booth and even helped run a few lights for some scenes. Headset and all! So fun. For this past show the kids sat through the show three different times! I saw it with them once and the other two times they sat with other friends while Kenny ran lights upstairs in the booth. By the third time they were definitely Shakespeared out, but so enjoyed seeing all the amazing costumes, sets, and of course, the amazing lights!
Great job, honey, on another show, and thank you for including James and Anna as much as you do. It would be far easier to leave them home much of the time, so thank you for teaching them as you go.
